analysis of ride along 2 opening scene

Analysis of ride along 2 opening scene

In the opening scene of ride along 2, camera shots and editing are very effective throughout. This occurs right at the beginning where every minute or so it freezes and then goes slow motion and fades out back into the film. This is good because it shows the audience clearly the different names of the characters and it is well presented as it cuts into the scene perfectly and its not like the producers cut from one character to one character, they planned it so they introduced them while they were taking part in that scene and just slowed it down for a bit and then straight after carried on the clip like normal. The wide and long shot when the car crashed through the brick wall was very effective as that was also slowed down motion and we clearly saw the bricks fall apart and smash into pieces, this is effective because it makes the audience wonder to themselves if they are going to survived as the crash was very horrific. This would also make the audience very tense and if they had seen ride along 1, this would make sense to them what is going on however if they didn't it would mean that they would wonder on what these men have done so badly? Throughout the whole scene the clips would change very quickly onto another scene, and sometimes onto another 2 of the characters fighting and arguing so the audience gets the best of both worlds and know what's going on at all times. However the character that was driving the green car seemed to have prevalence throughout the film as this also showed the audience that he is the most important and to take notice of him most and what he does as he is the one that is in it the most, however this is also because he is one of the bad guys and is going to be throughout the whole film so they want the audience to realise this.  Medium shots were effective as they clearly presented the facial expressions of most the characters, the one that stood out the most was at 1:35 as to begin with the character was really brave and stood in front of the car, expecting him to stop but as soon as he realised that he wasn't going messing around his facial expression changed in a split second and the camera angle really focused on that to show the audience that this wasn't a game. Overall there was many fantastic camera shots and editing skills involved in this opening scene.

Sound is used for very good effect throughout the scene of ride along 2.Right at the beginning the music starts of very quiet, and this is called non diegetic, this is because the audience can hear the sounds but the characters cannot. The music starts off very tense but also not very loud, this is because they want the audience to notice what is going on in the background and doesn't want to distract them as they need to understand the story line. As soon as the first gunshot was heard the music increased majorly and this suggests that this the start of something and from here onwards its all about to kick off and from then onwards stayed that loud and that upbeat throughout the film. The music is the type of music that you would associate with an action film, very violent and also the type of group that the people are you would consider as a bunch of young adults, would like that kind of r&b, hip hop music. Therfore this music also stereotypically fits with this type of group in society. All of the diegetic sounds involved such as the gunshots and when the front screen of the car smashes or when the door falls off the car are all much louder than the music, this is effective because it shows the audience that the characters can hear this as well and if its that loud for us imagine on how loud it is from there behalf and makes the viewers think on the scenario and how much of an impact the noises would have on that enclosed carpark and how they would echo.

Mise - en scene is a big part of this aswell, the car is one of the most important things involved because it is what this all revolves around. The green car has a big impact as that is what the camera is focused on mostly throughout, if it wasn't for the car then the whole opening scene would be different and the story line wouldn't make sense. This is effective for the audience because it suggests to them that they should focus on the green car and what is happening in that car as that is the scene where it is 1v1 the bad guy and the good guy, and this is where most of the action happens and most the gun shots and fights are involved. Overall the green car has a very large impact in these first 2 minutes of the film. Also another main prop during the opening scene would be the badge right at the start, this is because it is the main reason for everything to kick off and was the beginning of all that happened, it was like the starting point and from then on everything went downhill. This shows the audience that the character wasn't who he said he was therefore the others want payback, the badge is the main prop as this was the start of everything, however the green car is also important but doesn't have such an impact as the badge.

Throughout the first 2 minutes we find out a lot about the characters, such as we find out who the bad guys are and the good guys, and we also find out that they all are very violent as we see this when they use there weapons, guns and then also start fighting, This also suggests that this is an action film as action films all include what was included in this straight away, this is a genre indicator. There are many of them included, such as what I have mentioned and also the car crash, as most action films involve car crash's of some sort and this happened straight away. All of this happening right at the beginning suggests that this is an action/violent film, and because it happens straight away the audience can already realise that it is going to be quite an upbeat film and this will let them pick if they actually want to watch it and if this is there type of film. Also usually in action films people get injured a lot and this happened at the beginning when they car crash occurred, although the character didn't die like usual in films but he still looked seriously injured. At the time the audience didn't know if he was dead or not and this caused tension, but then realised that he was very lucky but also very injured. However the other characters are presented as very heartless because of this guy has just crashed his car off the floor of the carpark and it looked very terrible but they still decide to rush down, not care if he is okay or not and just still terrorise him and attack him verbally while he has blood gushing from his face. This shows that they are very heartless and potentially the bad guys of the film.
