Analysis opening scene of mechanic

In the opening scene of mechanic there are a few genre indicators that show this is a action film, throughout the film more and more become obvious but the main one here is the murder, in all action films(mostly) there is always going to be a murder and a bad guy. Right at the beginning we saw both of these happen. They start by introducing the first character as very important and rich, we notice this as he walks through the double doors, slamming them open with a swimming pool and a massive chilling area the other side which you wouldn't have if you had the average amount of money, we can also see this through him having bodyguards around to make sure he is safe and nobody is getting to him, which is proven wrong as you see throughout the scene they aren't the best, or the bad guy is just very smart and what he does. This suggests to us that many people could be after him and after his stuff because of all the money he has and this is the reason that he has people looking after him and maids looking after the house.

At the beginning when he takes off his watch and puts it onto the side, the camera really focuses on that, we then see when the man is swimming that the watch has been placed at the bottom of the pool, this makes the audience wonder who has put that there? and what's going to happen if he chooses to go down and get it. The camera shot again is the same to make us realise that this is the same watch he put on the side just a few minutes before. This makes the audience really think to themselves that something suspicious is going on. The camera shot between 0:35 and 0:40 is very effective as it clearly shows that he is trying to go down and reach it, and how close he actually got to it until he got attacked, and then straight after the camera focused on the facial expression of him and this showed the audience how scared he was to be in this situation. Then at 0:44 there was a very effective camera shot which is called 'point of view' where we saw on the clip what he was seeing out of his eyes and this would make us feel sorry for the character to be in this position and would make us wonder what he has done to deserve this. The camera shot at 1:40 was moving up and down to empathise the mans body, this suggests that they really want the viewers to be interested in him and this also has an effect on the young male audience as it would make them want to be like him and would be jealous of what he has got and also shows that what you need to be like to take part in action. At 2:00 the close up shot of the man paused for a little while, this was to show the viewers the mans expression on his face as it was determination, this shows that he is really involved with what he is doing and needs to make sure he gets it right otherwise he could get caught and everything would go wrong and this would all be a waste of time, it also shows him keep looking down at his watch this means that he is running out of time and even he doesn't know if he is going to make it on time and he is cutting it very short which means that he needs to hurry up but he can only go as fast as possible without getting caught. From 2:12 until the end of the scene the clips were moving very fast from one to another, this was because the producers want everybody to see everything that is going on, as in the man that is trying to escape but at the same time the bodyguards and the man that's just been murdered, also everybody running in and trying to help, they want the audience to see it all so they are caught up with everything that's going on and that's effective because it really gets the viewers involved as they have to concentrate majorly to make sure they see everything that's happening and this makes them more engaged as they wont be able to take there eyes off it and will get them really attracted to it.

Music and sound is a big part of the opening scene, as many times the music would give the audience an Adlerian rush, this is shown multiple times such as at the scene where the man is under the water getting murdered by the other guy, this makes the audience wonder what he has done? and why they are doing this? does he deserve it? also wonder if he is going to have the strength to fight back or is he just going to give up and let the bad guys win as he may not have the energy to be involved, at the music gets very fast and then as soon as we see that he has been killed it stops and that's effective because it resembles his heart beat. How it goes very fast and speeds up and then suddenly there's a massive drop and it all just stops. The music is also very effective at the part where the man is running out of time, as it causes a lot of tension because of how upbeat it is, as the beat increases and increases while he is escaping but then as soon as he jumps of the bridge it stops suddenly. This makes the viewers think has he survived? is he going to come back out of the water? nobody knows and the music stopping would just give them that negative feeling. However, once he gets out of the water the music starts again but is a slower beat and also means the audience aren't caught up in all the tension as everybody knows he survived so its nice and calm music for the ending, this is kind of presented as some sort of happiness that he has successfully done his aim and survived and now on his way back, this creates some sort of positive mood as everyone now wants to watch the rest of the film to find out on why he was doing that? and what he got out of it and if there was actually a reason to it that was fairly important?
